There are many forms of poetry to explore during the month of April. As you discover new ones, list them below with a short definition. Be sure to link the form to a page where we can all place poems written in that form! The first one has been done for you.
Haikuis a poetic form and a type of poetry from the Japanese culture. Haiku combines form, content, and language in a meaningful, yet compact form. Haiku poets, which you will soon be, write about everyday things. Many themes include nature, feelings, or experiences. Usually they use simple words and grammar. The most common form for Haiku is three short lines. The first line usually contains five (5) syllables, the second line seven (7) syllables, and the third line contains five (5) syllables. Haiku doesn't rhyme. A Haiku must "paint" a mental image in the reader's mind. This is the challenge of Haiku - to put the poem's meaning and imagery in the reader's mind in ONLY 17 syllables over just three (3) lines of poetry!
Epitaph: An Epitaph is an inscription on a tomb or gravestone that praises the person or reflects on the life of the deceased person. - Cammie Gordon 7th
Cinquain is a five line poem which describes a person, place, or thing. It comes from the French word for five, "cinq". The form is as follows:
A Clerihew poem is a form of poetry that is ussually funny and humorous. It is a four line poem that contains two rhyming couplets.It was invented by Edmund Clerihew Bentley.

The early 20th-century poets were the first to write in the style called "free verse" which allowed them to break off from traditional poetry. Sonnet: By Emma B. A sonnet is a type of poetry that originated in England. It originates from a word that means little song or little sound. A sonnet has 14 lines each consisting of 10 syllables. They are written in Iambic pentameter. This is a pattern of an unstressed syllable and then a stressed syllable. This pattern is repeated 5 times throughout the poem. William Shakespeare is a famous sonnet writer from England.

A bio poem is a poem that describes a person in only 11 lines. It starts with their name for the first line, then four adjectives, then family, followed by people they love, next how they feel, and then what they fear, next what they want to see, and where they live, last is their last name.
A rhyming poem is when each line has a repetition of the same sound at the end. Usually, these poems are funny and contain some humor within them. Sometimes, writers turn these poems into fun songs or even books. Dr. Seuss was a widely known writer known for his hilarious poems and and children's books.

Third Eye poems tells us about things that might go unnoticed or impossible to see with regular eyesight. They make it seem like they notice it by saying the Third Eye notices....
Example of a Third Eye Poem:
The third eye notices when Abbie spilt juice on the rug and said it was Lizzie. The third eye notices when you tell your mom you brushed your teeth for two minutes, and you only brushed for one. The third eye notices when you're supposed to be doing your homework, and you're listening to music. The third eye sees when you're on the phone for five minutes longer then you're supposed to be. The third eye can tell when you had ice cream for dinner when your parents went out.

Poetry can be in many different forms of shapes. When poets create a poem, they can take the subject of the poem and make the entire poem into a shape. This helps all readers connect to the poet creatively! I absolutely love this form of poetry. Who knows, there could even be a hidden message!!!
